Moving across the country is no easy feat. New culture, new places, new people…it’s a lot to take in. As an east coast girl, I had more than just the desert climate to adjust to when I moved here. I decided to jump in and find a place within the community. I joined the J and slowly started to meet fellow “NowGenners” that became workout buddies. Soon after, I attended Federation events starting with a happy hour and was eventually invited to a Shabbat dinner. My interest in the events I attended led to an invitation to join the Federation and the Mazelpalooza board.
From these boards I have made true friends, attended happy hours and hikes, networked, and eaten lots of yummy food. When you join one board, you want to support the other boards in town that drive the same mission, and attending is a huge way of showing support. It shows that all the work that people do to plan these events within the community is valued. This is key in helping our community grow. I served on the Federation board for two years and I am happy to be serving on my third Mazelapalooza board this year—specifically working on marketing efforts.
Mazel remains the biggest social event of the year for our community. I know I am not the only person who looks forward to it all year. What other event do you get to have a really fun night out in Old Town and wake up feeling good about the donation you made in the process? (Well, you might not wake up feeling great, but that’s what Chompie’s bagels are for.) During my service on the Mazel board, I have seen the event get bigger and better every year. Each year I am excited to experience the amazing venues, which this year we are at MAYA Day and Nightclub, to all the little extras, like the photo booth, it’s no wonder that local venues beg to host us. Plus, you never know what that board has up its sleeve for this year!
The true highlight of the event is the people. I love when I get to see the reunions of friends who haven’t seen each other in years, the people who continually support the events, and new friends of NowGen who want to see what it’s all about. And for those of you who are wondering—yes you could even meet your significant other at Mazelpalooza. We have had a few couples who are now married meet at Mazelpalooza.
Dress up (and for the ladies out there get your hair done at DryBar), grab some friends, and have fun supporting an amazing pillar of our community, the Federation. The event starts at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24, and for those who would like a discount, because who doesn’t, buy your tickets in advance to save waiting on line! Go to mazelpalooza.org and use the promo code MAZELVIP10 for $5 dollars off. Prices will go up at the door, so save yourself the time and money by purchasing in advance!
Whether you are new to town or are an Arizona native, I’ll save a place for you on the dance floor.
